Tree planting

When Transport for London decided to repair the Chiswick road bridge they approached the University at the Chiswick Sports Ground to ask if they could use part of our site near the bridge for construction vehicles and the site establishment.

The works went ahead but accidentally three trees were demolished during the construction work. Although this is sad we were promised that TfL would re-emburse us to the tune of four trees and all costs.

As part of Green Week a team of staff and students from the University planted the new trees. It was decided not to replace the trees in the orginal position as the ground was mainly scrub but to plant them along the road to the pavilion. The trees are horn-beam and should grow to a fair height and last a long time. The preparatory ground works were done by the TfL construction company BAM Nuttall Ltd.

From the University we had; Aleyme Andrea Montalvo James, David Palmer and Richard Hope who all took part in the digging in process.

Andrea, Environmental Data Assistant and full-time student, shared her story:

“Through the growing space campaign, the University of Westminster is promoting opportunities to plant trees at our Chiswick Sports Ground. The green initiative encourages students and the general community to get involve in sustainable activities, taking an active step forward in our responsibility to protect the environment.

As the poet Jos Mart once said, there are three important things that a man should do in life: plant a tree, read a book and have a son. And I can only describe the opportunity of planting a tree as a long-lasting, refreshing experience, one that can only bring out a big smile and the best side of anyone.”

We need your help to plant more trees in Chiswick. If you would like to join us please get in contact at sustainability@westminster.ac.uk.
